What are we trying to conserve?
Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is not a seaweed, but a flowering plant which lives in the sea.  The long emerald green blades offer some of the richest and most productive habitats, providing a home for a diversity of marine life.  Eelgrass meadows are threatened by industrial, residential and recreational activities such as pollution, dredging and anchor dragging.

You can adopt one square metre of transplanted eelgrass for just $25.00.

How are we trying to conserve eelgrass?
SeaChange has partnered with the Saanich Inlet Protection Society and others to improve the water quality in Saanich Inlet by pumping effluent from holding tanks on recreation boats.  "Pumpty Dumpty" volunteers are now working in the inlet on weekends throughout the year.

Contact Sarah Verstegen (sverstegen@shaw.ca) for more information.

Since 2002, the BC Coastal Eelgrass Stewardship Project, now part of the Seagrass Conservation Working Group has trained 22 coastal communities in eelgrass mapping and monitoring methodology
SeaChange's Executive Director oversees this province-wide eelgrass network.
